The koukaburra, laughing Hans. Biggest Kingfisher of them all. The noise explained as laughter makes it possible to keep them with neighbours.

Pairs go very well with their babies. We tried several pairs out to see what would happen if we left the babies with them. They layed 3 nests, raised all. Never a quarrel between 3 different ages.

for a friend we tried to form a big group. So several young from about the same age where put in one aviary, with 2 older males to have some 'chiefs' in there. The sexes come all out of a certain pair so that any couples formed would always be unrelated.

It worked. After 3 years the group is still together.
